WHAT TO EXPECT

Get a firsthand look at law enforcement through real-world experience with Irving PD.

  • PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
     

    • Unpaid internship offered for college credit only

    • Fall and spring interns participate in the IPD Citizen Police Academy

    • Includes hands-on training, lectures, case studies, ride-alongs, and observations

    • Approx. 130 flexible hours

    • Summer interns spend additional time with specialized units and community outreach activities instead of the academy

  • Students must meet the program requirements below to be considered:

    ​

    • Be enrolled in a college or university law enforcement intern course

    • Have an interest in working in law enforcement

    • Complete the Intern Personal History Statement and required release agreements

    • Pass an interview and background check

    • Demonstrate integrity, maturity, judgment, sound decision-making, and professionalism

  • The program is designed to give students meaningful exposure to the profession.

    ​

    • Earn college credit while gaining real-world experience

    • Learn patrol concepts related to traffic stops, arrests, searches, and community patrols

    • See firsthand what it takes to help keep a community safe

    • Flexible schedule available

    • Openings are typically available in the spring and fall, and occasionally in the summer

  • Students may email the Irving PD Intern Coordinator, Sgt. Jarred Barnes, to begin the application process or ask questions.

    • Summer semester: March 20, 2026 by 12:00 PM

    • Fall semester: June 12, 2026 by 12:00 PM

    • Spring semester: November 13, 2026 by 12:00 PM

EXPERIENCE
IRVING PD

This program gives students a broader look at Irving PD through exposure to multiple units and assignments. Topics include narcotics, auto theft, crimes against children, vice, bomb squad, and K9, while ride-alongs and observations with patrol, dispatch, the mental health unit, and detention help bring the day-to-day work of the department into focus.

SELECTION PROCESS

The Irving Police Department College Internship Program uses a structured selection process to identify students who are prepared to represent the department with professionalism, maturity, and integrity. 

 

The selection process is comprised of four phases. Applicants begin by contacting the Intern Coordinator, Sgt. Jarred Barnes, to receive the application and background packet. Completed packets and all required supporting documents must be submitted by the deadline. The Intern Coordinator will review submitted materials and contact qualified applicants to schedule an interview. Following the interview, selected applicants will be assigned to an investigator for completion of the background process. Applicants chosen for the internship will be notified upon final selection.
