NEW OFFICER

  • ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
     

    • U.S. citizen.

    • Age: 20 years 6 months to apply; 21 by academy graduation.

    • Highschool diploma or G.E.D.

    • Associate’s degree (60 college credit hours) with a 2.0 GPA, or exceptions for military/police/IPD detention service.

    • No Class B misdemeanor convictions in the past 10 years.

    • No court-ordered supervision/probation for serious offenses in the past 10 years.

    • Expungements are not excepted on convictions.

    • Max two moving violations or accidents in 18 months; max four in 36 months.

  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION:

    Background investigation includes a pre-polygraph interview, polygraph examination, interviews with references and employers, psychological examination, medical examination and drug screening, oral board interview, and chief's review.

    TRAINING:

    6-month academy followed by a 6-8 week in service.  After in service, all recruits move into field training that lasts approximately 17 weeks and includes four phases of training and a final.

LATERAL OFFICER

Are you a current police officer looking for a new department to call home?  Check out our lateral requirements and information below!

  • Lateral Police Officers are held to the same requirements as entry level officers. Each officers prior experience and employment history will be evaluated on a case by case basis to determine training needs of the individual to have a successful career here at IPD.

    EDUCATION REQUIREMENT EXEMPTION:

    Lateral Police Officers with at least three years as a full-time peace officer with a public law enforcement agency are exempt from the 60-hour college requirement if their police officer experience is immediately preceding the submission of their application.
     

  • A lateral police officer is eligible for a starting salary based on his or her whole years of police officer experience. Service time can include multiple agencies if breaks in service are less than 180 days between agencies. Additionally you must not have had more than 180 days break in service between your most previous agency and your date of hire with the Irving Police Department. This is the pay scale for lateral police officers:

    1 whole year of service: $87,996

    2 whole years of service: $92,388
    3 whole years of service: $96,996
    4 whole years of service: $101,844
    5 whole years of service: $106,932
    6 whole years of service: $112,272

  • MODIFIED LATERAL ACADEMY:

    ​

    All out-of-state certified Police Officers, that meet TCOLE REQUIREMENTS, will be required to attend the Irving Police Department’s modified lateral academy.

     

    Texas Police Officers who are TCOLE certified with at least 12 months of patrol experience are eligible for an abbreviated training program. This consists of nine weeks of updates on policies and procedures, as well as field training, which is based on performance.

    TRAINING:

    All training for Lateral Officers is based on an adult education program and principles. Emphasis is placed on classroom updates and practical exercises rather than a military-oriented training program.

    ​

    BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION:

    Background investigators are required to review internal files including disciplinary records.  If an investigator is unable to view the file, the applicant cannot be considered for employment.

Job Description:

An Irving Police Officer is responsible for protecting and serving the community by enforcing laws, responding to emergencies, conducting investigations, and maintaining public safety. Officers must demonstrate integrity, sound judgment, and physical and emotional resilience in all duties.

CIVIL SERVICE EXAM

Registration for the June 8, 2026 Civil Service Exam is now open.  Check below to view location details.  We are holding exams in two locations: Irving, Texas, and Orlando, Florida.  We hope to see you there!

  • The Irving Police Department civil service exam will be held at the Irving Convention Center at the address below.  Doors will open at 3:00 PM Central Time, and the exam will begin promptly at 4:00 PM Central Time.  Applicants who arrive after the exam has started will not be permitted to enter.

  • The Irving Police Department civil service exam will also be held at the Orlando location listed below. Doors open at 4:00 PM Eastern Time, and the exam will begin promptly at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. Late arrivals will not be admitted once the exam begins.

    DECEMBER 6, 2025 ELIGIBILITY LIST

  • All applicants must successfully complete the Irving Police Department row test.

     

    The entry fitness exam is a 2,000-meter indoor row on a Concept2 machine with the damper set to five.  Minimum passing times are based on age, weight, and gender, and applicants must score at least 54.7% to remain eligible for employment.

     

    Applicants testing at off-site civil service exam locations will complete the row test later in Irving when they report for their interview.
